What’s Been Going On?

Last time I posted I was all “woo, we’re going to Japan” and stuff. Aaaand then I didn’t post again. I bet our many followers were wondering if we died in Japan or something… but we didn’t. We had an awesome trip, we came home safe and sound, and we’re having an awesome summer.

I’m putting together a post about Japan; but in the meantime check out what else we’ve been up to!

First off, Winry is getting HUGE. She’s up to 9 lbs now and is completely adorable. I wish she were full-grown already and I can’t wait for her to be a big FAT-FAT. Unfortunately, Ragdolls grow for 4 years, so we have a while to wait. She’s very cuddly, loves strangers, and is extremely tolerant—essentially everything a Ragdoll cat should be. She has learned to walk on the leash and will even go up and down the stairs to our apartment on it.

Oh, and she loves parties

Ben has been training under Leo Patrone, a wedding photographer and old friend. Leo shoots in film and develops and scans all of his own negatives, including mixing the chemicals for the development. Ben has been shadowing him and learning his processes as well as how to be a better photographer. Ben has always wanted to be a photojournalist, so learning to be a professional photographer is a dream come true for him. So far he’s traveled to two weddings with Leo as a second shooter and is going to Hawaii in two weeks to shoot a third.

Ben started taking horseback riding lessons so he can learn how to ride and we can share another hobby together.

Ben quit his previous job as a Technical Writer in the oil industry to take a new job as a Technical Writer/Instructional Designer in the IT certification industry. He’s really enjoying being at a job with more relevant technology and he doesn’t have to drive an hour to work anymore, which is awesome.

Ben started boxing 3x a week at a local boxing gym. Over the years, Ben has tried different types of fighting, including MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but he didn’t really love them. He finally decided to try boxing and totally loves it. He likes that it’s a super intense full-body workout; plus his arms are looking preeetty sexy so I’m into it.

After just over a year in project management, I accepted a promotion and position change to go back to the Marketing team at the company that I’ve been working for. I’m now their Content & Product Marketing Manager and manage a team of 3, including my very own intern!

I traveled with a group of my horse friends to a ranch in Solvang, California for a week of horseback riding and girl time. We went on two trail rides a day through beautiful mustard fields, oak trees, and spanish moss. I went wine tasting for my first time and it was awesome!

I also traveled to Sacremento with a group of horse friends for the Western States Horse Expo. I learned a ton from the different clinics/presentations and even refrained from buying all the things.

My ladies

I rode in a private clinic for 3 days back in Utah and learned even MORE about how to be a better rider. I’m really enjoying spending time with horses again and am loving all my horse-related adventures! I’m trying to convince Ben that we need our own horse… we will see. We’re not really sure if we’re ready to settle down in Utah yet and since a horse is a big commitment we want to figure a few things out first 🙂

Me and Murphy

I made it 67 days without wearing the same outfit twice. That doesn’t mean I didn’t wear the same article of clothing twice, it just means I didn’t wear the same combo twice. But I actually didn’t wear the same shirt twice… anyway I was pretty proud. And I’ve only bought 3 shirts since I completed the challenge, so I think Ben is happy too 😉

Day 67 – My celebration outfit

We helped my grandparents open my family lodge for the summer and they taught us all the ins and outs of the solar, water, and propane systems. This may not seem like a big deal to you, but the only people in my entire family who know who to run the lodge and my grandpa and my dad. Ben and I feel super grateful to have learned the systems and look forward to the day when we get our own key!

Ben’s sister, her kids, and Ben’s mom came up from California for a visit. We even got to have a nephew/niece sleepover!

We went to San Antonio, TX to visit my brother and his wife over the 4th of July weekend. They are living there for the summer for my sister-in-law’s internship. We went to Six Flags, hung out at the river walk, saw the Alamo, and pretty much sweated our guts out the whole time. I never knew lemonade could be so amazing!

We did a Dutch oven cook-out up American Fork canyon with my family. Ben made a Dutch oven meatloaf and it was a hit (as his food always is).

Hanging out

We actually started buying furniture! You may not know, but for the past couple years Ben, and I have been living a minimalist life—no couch, no bed frame, no night stands, no dresser… just a couple of desks, a bookshelf, and a mattress. Rather than buying furniture or decorating our place we decided to put all our spare money toward having adventures and traveling. Now that we’re back from Japan, though, we can finally put some money toward making our house a home. We started in our bedroom with the big-ticket items and are now moving into the living room and getting decorative-type stuff. I’ve been maintaining a house inspiration book for years and it’s awesome to finally put our own house together.

Our room

Ben and I are getting AWESOME at painting minis and we’ve finished 37 miniatures since we started painting two years ago. We have 6 minis that are in-progress, 9 minis that are primed and ready to start, and 56 minis that are assembled but otherwise haven’t been touched. We’ve been trying to take time to paint every week since I signed up for a Reaper Miniatures Kickstarter last year and a shipment of over 250 minis will be arriving in October. We’re going to be drowning in minis, seriously.

We took a group of our friends to our family lodge WITHOUT SUPERVISION. Again, my not seem like a big deal to you, but we’re the first ones other than my parents and grandparents to bring up friends and hang out at the cabin alone. We took up a group of 7 friends and hung out for three days, eating way too much and playing board games. I didn’t end up taking many pictures because it was so low-key but it was so much fun and I can’t wait to do it again.

Aaaaaand we celebrated our 3 year wedding anniversary. Awwwwwww ❤

People say we look a lot different in our wedding photos… but I think we look the same. Who knows.
